Pet food is not for human consumption, but the production environment is held to food-grade standards because the same spoilage mechanisms apply: fats oxidise, proteins break down, and films left on containers and equipment become reservoirs for organisms and odour.
What makes pet food distinctive is high fat content combined with strong odour and containers that circulate at high speed between extrusion, coating, cooling and packing. This guide covers dry pet food (extruded kibble, biscuits, treats) and wet pet food (cans, pouches, trays), organised around three recurring control problems: fat, odour and container turnaround.
· Fat is the primary residue. Dry kibble is coated with fat or oil after extrusion, and wet formulations carry tallow, poultry fat and gravy. Fat films are hydrophobic - ambient water beads off them, and only heated water under pressure with a suitable detergent lifts them.
· Rancid fat is a quality and odour problem, not only a hygiene one. Oxidised fat left on trays and containers carries stale odour into the next run, which in a multi-recipe plant becomes a finished-product complaint.
· Odour migrates on surfaces and people. Residues on footwear, aprons, trolleys and rack carts move odour from the wet kitchen into the dry packing hall and back again.
· Containers are the highest-frequency hygiene touchpoint. Ingredient bins, trays, pallets, wheeled bins and returnable packaging cycle through the plant continuously.
· Multi-species lines share equipment. Beef, poultry, fish and lamb recipes may run on the same extruder, coating drum and packing line, so container cleaning is a changeover control rather than routine housekeeping.
Control problem | Where it appears | What the cleaning job actually is | Equipment that fits |
Fat and oil films | Coating drums, trays, containers, trolleys, floor and walls of the coating or wet kitchen area | Heated water under pressure, detergent action, sufficient contact time, fresh final rinse | Crate and tray washer, trolley washer, central foam cleaning station |
Odour carry-over | Wheeled bins, rack carts, aprons, footwear, changing rooms | Complete removal of organic film plus drying - residual moisture keeps odour active | Bin washer, rack cart washer, apron washing machine, boot washer |
Container turnaround | Ingredient bins, pallets, trays, returnable transport packaging | High throughput with consistent results so containers are not a bottleneck or a weak link | Tunnel-type crate washer, pallet and tray washing on the same line |
The highest-volume cleaning job in a pet food plant is the stackable container. A tunnel machine passes them continuously on a dual-track conveyor through heated, high-pressure spray stages. Henger builds the HE-3600 and HE-4800 crate and tray washing machines in SUS304 stainless steel with a recirculating multi-tank water system and an optional air drying tunnel.
Parameter | HE-3600 | HE-4800 |
Cleaning stages | 3 (pre-wash, main-wash, washing) | 4 (pre-wash, main-wash, rinsing, washing) |
Washing capacity | 300 - 600 crates/h | 600 - 1,000 crates/h |
Max. container size (W x H) | 650 x 350 mm | 650 x 350 mm |
Overall dimensions (L x W x H) | 3,600 x 1,700 x 1,600 mm | 4,800 x 1,700 x 1,600 mm |
Pre-wash / main-wash pump | 5.5 kW / 7.5 kW | 5.5 kW / 7.5 kW |
Rinsing pump power | N/A | 2.2 kW |
Total installed power | 13.37 kW | 15.95 kW |
Water tanks | 2 units | 3 units |
Heating | Steam heating, water up to 95°C | Steam heating, water up to 95°C |
Material | Food-grade SUS304 stainless steel | Food-grade SUS304 stainless steel |
Optional module | Air drying tunnel | Air drying tunnel |
The heated pre-wash stage is what makes fat removal work - published figures put the working range at 82°C to 95°C - because ambient water will not lift a fat film no matter how much pressure is applied. The optional air drying tunnel is worth costing wherever containers move into packing or dry storage, since residual moisture carries odour and feeds microbial growth. The published container envelope is up to 650 mm wide and 350 mm high.

Bulk ingredients and finished product move on 200L trolleys, which collect fat and fine meal. The 200L meat trolley washer is a dual-chamber machine - separate wash and rinse chambers - in SUS304 stainless steel with 2.0 mm wall thickness, using a 360-degree rotating spray arm, electronic detergent dosing and PLC control with photoelectric safety sensors. It processes up to 60 carts per hour at 2,800 x 1,820 x 1,620 mm, with 30 kW steam heating and a 2,160 mm maximum lifting height.
The dual-chamber arrangement is what makes this machine useful for fat-heavy work: wash water is filtered and recirculated inside the wash chamber, while the trolley moves to a separate chamber where fresh water removes detergent and loosened residue. Trolleys and bulk bins should be checked against the 200L standard and the 2,160 mm lifting height.
Wheeled bins are where odour control starts, because a bin that is only hosed out keeps a film of fat and fine meal in every corner and rib. Henger’s automatic tunnel-type trash can and bin washing machine (SDHG-TWW-304) runs 120L and 240L bins and larger containers on a heavy-duty stainless steel conveyor chain through three stages: hot water pre-wash with detergent, high-pressure recirculating main wash, and a fresh water final rinse. Frame, tracks and reservoirs are SUS304, and internal width, height and conveyor guide rails are customizable.
Published nozzle coverage targets inner and outer walls, bottom wheels and open lids from multiple intersecting directions. The bin base, the underside of the lid and the wheel assemblies are exactly where fat and fine powder accumulate and where a manual wash misses most often.
Where a plant runs smoking, drying or chilling on racks and carts, those carts collect grease, coagulated protein and smoke stains inside frame gaps. Henger’s SCW-580 rack cart washer rotates the cart through a multi-angle spray system so all sides, shelves and undersides are cleaned in one cycle, with separate circulation and clean water tanks.
Parameter | SCW-580 |
Suitable cart size | Up to 1,000 x 1,000 x 2,000 mm |
Capacity | 20 - 30 carts/hour |
Main body material | SUS304 stainless steel |
Rotation drive | 1 x 1.5 kW variable-frequency gear motor with rotating frame |
Main wash pump | 1 x 22 kW pump with piping system |
Circulation pump | 1 x 3.0 kW pump with piping system |
Water tanks | 1 circulation tank (filtration + steam heating piping) + 1 clean water tank |
Ventilation | 1 exhaust fan + 1 cooling fan for steam exhaust and heat dissipation |
Total power | 26.5 kW |
Washing process | Circulation water wash - foaming - circulation water wash - clean water rinse |
Note that Henger also publishes a separate SCW-560 smokehouse rack cart washer using a foam disinfectant pre-spray followed by a high-pressure hot water rinse at 3-6 bar and up to 85°C, with dimensions custom-manufactured to match the customer’s own trolleys. The SCW-580 suits higher throughput with a 360-degree rotating frame; the SCW-560 suits plants where a custom-sized chamber matched to existing carts is the priority.

Container cleaning is a throughput question. If a wash line is slower than the packing line, containers pile up or operators resort to quick rinses. Three engineering choices keep cleaning in step.
· Match wash capacity to container consumption, not to total container stock. The HE-4800 processes 600-1,000 containers per hour across four stages; the HE-3600 at 300-600 units per hour suits smaller or lower-frequency loops.
· Keep the return flow one-way. A single-direction path from dirty container reception through washing to clean storage prevents clean and soiled containers from meeting at the same doorway.
· Put bulk trolleys and bins on the same cleaning route. Running 200L trolleys at up to 60 carts per hour keeps bulk handling equipment out of the manual-wash backlog.
Pet food plants usually split into a wet or fresh-meat kitchen area, a dry extrusion and packing area, and a warehouse, and staff move between them. Footwear and workwear are the main carriers of odour and organic residue across those boundaries. Henger’s stainless steel hand washing and disinfection station combines an induction faucet, soap dispenser, disinfectant dispenser and hand dryer in one 304 stainless steel unit in one to five station configurations. For entry control, Henger publishes the boot washing range as 23 models (HE-HCDS01 to HE-HCDS23), and the published application list names pet food explicitly. Where aprons are used in the wet kitchen, the apron washing machine is a 1,000 x 650 x 1,500 mm cabinet driven entirely by water pressure with no electrical connection.
The coating drum and wet kitchen are where fat reaches surfaces no container washer touches - floors, wall panels, drain surrounds, the exterior of mixers and conveyors. A central foam cleaning station consolidates high-pressure rinsing, foam cleaning, disinfectant application and compressed-air foam into one fixed workstation, with a 25 m sanitary hose and constant pressure control.
Published feature | Reference data |
Cleaning modes | High-pressure water / foam liquid / disinfectant / compressed air foam (one-click switch) |
Hose | 25 m sanitary hose, auto-retract collector or manual hose reel |
Pressure control | Constant pressure system for uniform coverage |
Water consumption | Published figure: 70% reduction vs. conventional cleaning methods |
Control | Touchscreen interface, intelligent timing, manual / automatic mode |
Maintenance | Built-in water scale removal system, modular assembly |
Core valve | German-imported valve body |
The intelligent timing function matters because fat removal depends on contact time: a pre-set cycle keeps detergent dwell time identical between shifts, so a changeover that depends on a fat film being fully lifted does not vary with whoever is holding the lance. Henger also publishes a portable
high-pressure foam cleaning machine for plants that need the same cleaning modes without a fixed installation.
Pet food plants rarely buy one machine at a time; they buy a wash room that has to serve container loops, trolley loops, bin loops and workwear at once. Henger groups this equipment under a single Tools Washing Solution, so trays, bulk bins, trolleys and rack carts are sized against each other. The entry side is specified separately as a Complete Dressing Room Hygiene Solution, keeping personnel-borne contamination controlled before staff reach production.
If your plant... | Specify | Why it matters |
Cycles large volumes of trays, crates and ingredient bins | Tunnel-type crate and tray washer (HE-3600 / HE-4800) | 300-1,000 containers/h with a heated pre-wash stage that lifts fat films |
Needs containers dry before dry-product packing | Air drying tunnel option | Removes the moisture that keeps odour active and feeds microbial growth |
Moves bulk ingredients or product on 200L trolleys | 200L trolley washer | Up to 60 carts/h, dual chamber, separate fresh-water rinse |
Sends bins and returnable packaging back out | Tunnel-type bin washing machine | Hot pre-wash with detergent plus high-pressure wash for fat and fine meal |
Runs smoking, drying or chilling on rack carts | Rack cart washer SCW-580 (or custom-sized SCW-560) | Cleans frame gaps and undersides where grease and smoke residue collect |
Runs multiple species or recipes on shared equipment | Dedicated container sets plus a mechanical wash cycle | Container cleaning is a changeover control point, not housekeeping |
Brings staff from wet zones into dry packing areas | Multi-station hand wash units plus boot washers | Footwear and workwear are the main odour and residue carriers across zones |
Issues greasy aprons in the wet kitchen | Apron washing machine | Water-pressure driven, automatic dosing, no electrical connection |
Washes coating areas, drains and equipment exteriors | Central foam cleaning station (or portable foam machine) | One workstation for water, foam and disinfectant with 25 m reach |
Q1: Why can a pet food plant not simply hose containers down?
Because the main residue is fat, and fat films are hydrophobic - ambient water beads off them rather than lifting them. Removing a fat film needs heated water under pressure plus detergent action and sufficient contact time, followed by a fresh water rinse. The published working range for the tunnel crate washer is 82°C to 95°C.
Q2: How do we control odour in a pet food plant?
In practice, odour control is residue control plus drying. Strong odours come from organic film and residual moisture on bins, rack carts, aprons, footwear and changing-room surfaces, so the sequence is: remove the film with heated washing, then dry the surface. This is why the air drying tunnel option and the drying step in booth-style equipment matter more here than in most plants.
Q3: Which machines handle the highest container volume?
The tunnel-type crate and tray washer. The HE-3600 runs 300-600 containers per hour in three stages, and the HE-4800 runs 600-1,000 per hour in four stages including an additional rinsing stage. The published container envelope is 650 mm wide by 350 mm high for both. Large ingredient bins outside that envelope need checking with our engineering team, and the bin washing machine is the alternative for wheeled bins.
Q4: Can the same equipment wash containers used for different species or recipes?
Physically yes, but the selection decision changes: where dedicated container sets are used for species or recipe separation, a mechanical wash cycle gives the same result every time rather than a rinse that varies by operator. The validation required depends on your food safety scheme; Henger provides general equipment guidance, not a compliance conclusion for your facility.
Q5: What about rack carts used for smoked or dried pet treats?
Henger publishes two relevant machines. The SCW-580 cleans carts up to 1,000 x 1,000 x 2,000 mm at 20-30 carts per hour using a 360-degree rotating frame with separate circulation and clean water tanks. The SCW-560 uses a foam disinfectant pre-spray with a dwell phase, then a high-pressure rinse at 3-6 bar and up to 85°C, with dimensions custom-manufactured to match your own trolleys.
Q6: What utilities and footprint should a pet food plant plan for?
As reference published figures: the crate and tray washer occupies 3.6-4.8 m of line length by 1.7 m wide at 13.37-15.95 kW; the 200L trolley washer needs 30 kW steam heating with a 600 L tank; the SCW-580 requires 26.5 kW total; hand washing stations range from 550 x 380 mm to 2,400 x 550 mm; and entry stations are 380V/50Hz as standard. Henger provides free layout drawings before purchase.
Pet food hygiene comes down to three things: lift the fat, remove the odour, and keep container cleaning faster than the line it serves.
